Faith by hearing

An open Bible on a wooden lectern in soft light
So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ. Romans 10:17

Introduction:

  • Faith comes from hearing. You only believe what you hear (Rom 10:17).
  • Rahab did not see the sea open. She heard and believed: "the Lord your God is the supreme God of the heavens above and the earth below" (Josh 2:11).
  • Bartimaeus did not see Jesus. He heard that Jesus was nearby and began to shout (Mark 10:47).
  • "Blessed are those who believe without seeing me" (John 20:29). And "it is impossible to please God without faith" (Heb 11:6).

1. Faith without the miracle. Faith does not depend on what you receive (Heb 11:13).

  • The heroes of faith "died still believing what God had promised them. They did not receive what was promised, but they saw it all from a distance" (Heb 11:13).
  • "All these people earned a good reputation because of their faith, yet none of them received all that God had promised" (Heb 11:39).
  • Faith is not a guarantee of a miracle. Faith is trusting God with the miracle or without it.

2. Faith for the miracle. God still answers those who believe (Matt 8:10).

  • The centurion did not ask for a visit; he asked for a word: "Just say the word from where you are, and my servant will be healed" (Matt 8:8). And Jesus: "I haven't seen faith like this in all Israel!" (Matt 8:10).
  • The leper said: "Lord, if you are willing, you can heal me". Jesus answered: "I am willing" (Matt 8:2-3).
  • The Syrophoenician woman insisted until she heard: "Dear woman, your faith is great" (Matt 15:28).

3. Faith for heaven. The greatest miracle is salvation (Acts 16:31).

  • The jailer asked Paul: "what must I do to be saved?". The answer: "Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, along with everyone in your household" (Acts 16:30-31).
  • Believe in the resurrection of Jesus: "If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved" (Rom 10:9).
  • "God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can't take credit for this; it is a gift from God" (Eph 2:8).

Conclusion:

For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve this victory through our faith. 1 John 5:4
  • Faith without the miracle, faith for the miracle, faith for heaven. This is the victory that overcomes the world: our faith.
  • Faith comes from hearing. Get close to where the Word is preached.
  • What have you been hearing?
