Jesus and marriage

Stone jars at a wedding feast, one filled with wine
This miraculous sign at Cana in Galilee was the first time Jesus revealed his glory. John 2:11

Introduction:

  • Jesus' first miracle was not in a temple. It was at a wedding celebration (John 2:1, 11).
  • Why did Jesus turn water into wine at a wedding?
  • Because marriage matters to God. And what happened in Cana can happen in your home.

1. Jesus goes where He is invited (John 2:2).

  • "Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the celebration" (John 2:2).
  • He doesn't break in. He comes in where He is called.
  • Was Jesus invited to your marriage, or only to the ceremony?

2. Bring your troubles to Jesus (John 2:3).

  • "The wine supply ran out during the festivities" (John 2:3). Every marriage has a day when the wine runs out.
  • Mary gave no speech. She brought the problem: "They have no more wine" (John 2:3).
  • Complaining to the guests brings no wine. Bringing it to Jesus does.

3. Jesus always acts at the right time (John 2:4).

  • "My time has not yet come" (John 2:4).
  • Jesus' delay is not neglect. It is timing.
  • Mary trusted His timing: "Do whatever he tells you" (John 2:5).

4. Jesus tests and rewards faith (John 2:7).

  • "Fill the jars with water" (John 2:7). He asked for water from people who needed wine.
  • The order made no sense. Obedience came before the miracle.
  • "the servants followed his instructions" (John 2:8), and they knew what even the master of ceremonies did not (John 2:9).

5. Which jar is empty in your marriage? (John 2:6).

  • Standing nearby were "six stone water jars" (John 2:6). They were in the house, but empty.
  • Jesus brought no jars from outside. He used what was already there.
  • The miracle begins when you admit the jar is empty.

6. What Jesus does is better (John 2:10).

  • "A host always serves the best wine first" (John 2:10). The world serves the best at the start and the worst at the end.
  • Jesus reverses the order: "But you have kept the best until now!" (John 2:10).
  • What He does in your marriage is not a patch. It is new wine, and better.

Conclusion:

But you have kept the best until now! John 2:10
  • Jesus doesn't want your marriage to end. And He has the best for it.
  • Invite Jesus. Bring the problem. Wait for His time. Fill the jars.
  • Which jar in your marriage will you hand over to Jesus today?
