What are temperaments?

Temperaments are innate patterns of behavior, emotion, and thought that shape how we interact with the world and make decisions. This theory, developed since antiquity, classifies temperaments into four main types: Choleric, Sanguine, Phlegmatic, and Melancholic.

Every person has a unique mix of these temperaments, but there is usually a dominant one that influences your reactions, relationships, and lifestyle. Knowing your temperament can help you develop interpersonal skills, better understand your emotions, and make decisions more aligned with your personality.

The Four Temperaments

🟠 Choleric – Determined and a Leader

Choleric people are intense, determined, and results-focused. They are natural leaders, love challenges, and make fast decisions. They can, however, be impatient and overly direct at times.

🟡 Sanguine – Communicative and Enthusiastic

Sanguines are outgoing, optimistic, and sociable. They love being around people, communicate easily, and enjoy novelty. On the other hand, they can struggle with focus and consistency.

🔵 Phlegmatic – Calm and Analytical

The phlegmatic temperament is characterized by calmness, patience, and diplomacy. These people are observant, thoughtful, and prefer to avoid conflict. They may, however, find it hard to make fast decisions or show their emotions.

🟣 Melancholic – Deep and Perfectionist

Melancholics are detail-oriented, analytical, and highly sensitive. They value quality, are creative, and enjoy planning. They can, though, be critical of themselves and others and lean toward perfectionism.
