The Future Is Incredible, and I'm Running Toward It

Young person looking at the horizon (Benjamin Davies)

The year was 2004. My father sat me down to learn FrontPage — a Microsoft website builder. From that point on, I discovered the internet: not the internet of today, but the dial-up kind, where we waited until midnight to use it so it wouldn't cost too much.

From that time to now, there have been only 5 years when I worked in something unrelated to digital marketing and the internet.

It's a shame I can't send a message back to the past and tell my former self that I was in the most promising place imaginable. That my father's decision put me in an environment that never stops growing — in fact, it multiplies itself every so often.

I'm not sure I would have understood that the letter I'm writing to you now was reviewed not just for spelling, but for meaning, by an Artificial Intelligence — available for free.

That the many texts I painstakingly wrote for my blog could have been automated. That the images I didn't have rights to could be generated from scratch. That the PHP code that seemed unreachable to me would be produced quickly with a simple prompt.

And that much of the digital bricklaying work I did would be spared.

I'm telling you all this so you'll reflect on what things will look like in 10 years. Where will digital marketing and everything we do in our company be then?

The Extreme Universe has a Milky Way of growth. It's surreal — as someone you know would say.

Momentary adjustments are necessary to put things in their proper place, and to remind us that the future doesn't wait for us — in fact, we have to run to reach it. Otherwise, we might get left behind.

I'm certain the future is incredible, and I want to run toward it.

Are you coming too?
