The humility of Christ

A crown of thorns on rough wood
he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal's death on a cross. Philippians 2:8

Introduction:

  • Every man wants to be king, every king wants to be god, but only God wanted to be man.
  • Satan wanted to be God: "be like the Most High" (Isa 14:14). Adam fell for the same promise: "you will be like God, knowing both good and evil" (Gen 3:5).
  • Jesus went the opposite way. "Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to" (Phil 2:6).

1. Who is Jesus Christ? True God and true man (John 1:1, 14).

  • True God: "The Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1).
  • True man: "So the Word became human and made his home among us" (John 1:14).
  • Man forever. Risen, He said: "ghosts don't have bodies, as you see that I do" (Luke 24:39). Today the Mediator is "the man Christ Jesus" (1 Tim 2:5).

2. What is humility? It is not making yourself smaller; it is seeing yourself at the right size (Rom 12:3).

  • Humility is not ignorance. It is not poverty. It is not false modesty.
  • Humility is recognizing what you know and what you don't: "Don't think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves" (Rom 12:3).
  • Humility is knowing how to be humiliated. Cursed by Shimei, David said: "Leave him alone and let him curse" (2 Sam 16:11).

3. The humiliation of Christ. He went down (Phil 2:7-8).

  • He thought of others, not of Himself: "Don't look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too" (Phil 2:4).
  • He served: "he took the humble position of a slave" (Phil 2:7). "even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others" (Mark 10:45).
  • He sacrificed Himself: "he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal's death on a cross" (Phil 2:8).
  • He glorified God: it all ends "to the glory of God the Father" (Phil 2:11).

Conclusion:

So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time he will lift you up in honor. 1 Peter 5:6
  • Jesus went down, and God lifted Him up: "Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor" (Phil 2:9).
  • You take care of going down. God takes care of lifting up.
  • Are you trying to climb on your own or accepting to go down with Christ?
