The marks of a church that shook the world

All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (...), and to prayer. Acts 2:42

Introduction:

  • The church is born in Acts 2: the Spirit comes, Peter preaches, and those who believed were "baptized and added to the church that day" (Acts 2:41).
  • A few years later, its enemies shouted that they "have caused trouble all over the world" (Acts 17:6).
  • Ten marks of a church that shook the world, in six verses (Acts 2:42-47).

1. Firm in the Word and in prayer. The church that shakes the world starts on its knees, with the Bible open (Acts 2:42).

  • "All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching" (Acts 2:42). Doctrinal firmness: Christianity has content.
  • And also "to prayer" (Acts 2:42). Perseverance, not an event.

2. Awe and signs. Where God is feared, God intervenes (Acts 2:43).

  • "A deep sense of awe came over them all" (Acts 2:43).
  • "and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders" (Acts 2:43). God's extraordinary intervention did not stay in the past.

3. Fellowship and generosity. They loved being together and had eyes for those in need (Acts 2:44-45).

  • "And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had" (Acts 2:44).
  • "They sold their property and possessions and shared the money with those in need" (Acts 2:45).
  • They were not communists. No one was forced: "The property was yours to sell or not sell, as you wished" (Acts 5:4). Generosity is a choice, not a system.

4. Temple and praise. The church loved being in God's house (Acts 2:46-47).

  • "They worshiped together at the Temple each day" (Acts 2:46). Delight, not duty.
  • "all the while praising God" (Acts 2:47). Praise was constant, not just on Sunday.

5. Goodwill and growth. Their way of life opened doors; God made the church grow (Acts 2:47).

  • They lived "enjoying the goodwill of all the people" (Acts 2:47).
  • The Lord is the one who adds, and "each day" (Acts 2:47). Growth is not a strategy; it is fruit.

Conclusion:

And each day the Lord added to their fellowship those who were being saved. Acts 2:47
  • The church did not shake the world with structure. It shook it with life.
  • Church is not a place you visit; it is people you live with.
  • Which of these marks is missing from your life with the church today?
