The marriage of Adam and Eve

Two intertwined trees in a garden at dawn
This explains why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, and the two are united into one. Genesis 2:24

Introduction:

  • The first marriage in history happened before sin (Gen 2:18-25).
  • Before the fall, marriage was the way God designed it. After the fall, it became what we know.
  • To learn what God wants for your marriage, look at the Garden.

1. Completeness. God took a part of Adam, and he was left incomplete (Gen 2:21-22).

  • "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him" (Gen 2:18).
  • God did not make the woman from dust. He made her from the man's side. What was taken from Adam went into Eve.
  • "At last! (...) This one is bone from my bone, and flesh from my flesh!" (Gen 2:23).

2. Suitability. Eve was able to help; able to be with him (Gen 2:20).

  • Adam named every animal, but "still there was no helper just right for him" (Gen 2:20).
  • Company is not help. The animals were close; only Eve was his match.

3. Union and separation. To be joined, you have to leave (Gen 2:24).

  • "a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife" (Gen 2:24).
  • Separation comes before union. Whoever does not leave father and mother does not become one.
  • One flesh is not two people sharing a house. It is one.

4. Transparency. They were naked and had nothing to hide (Gen 2:25).

  • "Now the man and his wife were both naked, but they felt no shame" (Gen 2:25).
  • A marriage without sin is a marriage without secrets.

5. Spirituality and responsibility. They talked with God and took care of the Garden (Gen 2:15-16).

  • God spoke with Adam, and God was the one who brought the woman to the man (Gen 2:16, 22).
  • "The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it" (Gen 2:15).
  • Marriage is not a vacation in paradise. It is God's presence and work in the garden.

6. The errors of the fall. Lack of communication and separation (Gen 3).

  • God gave the command to Adam before Eve existed (Gen 2:16-17). It was Adam's job to pass on to Eve what God had said.
  • The two were no longer together. After sin, union turned into accusation: "It was the woman you gave me" (Gen 3:12).
  • Where communication ends, separation begins.

Conclusion:

It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him. Genesis 2:18
  • Look at the Garden God made. That is where you learn what God wants for your marriage.
  • Completeness, suitability, union, transparency, spirituality and responsibility: that is the design.
  • Which part of the Garden does your marriage need to return to today?
