Called to Run with Horses

Running horse (Sarah Olive)
Sarah Olive

Jeremiah is, without doubt, one of the prophets most challenged by God. From the very first calling, one could already foresee the responsibility he would carry. He was summoned to plant, but also to uproot; to build up, but also to tear down. His mission would require more than words — it would require spiritual endurance.

At various moments, his strength wavered. His heart longed for comfort, like someone expecting relief from God: "I have done so much, I deserve rest." But instead of rest, more was demanded. God did not spare him. He stretched him, forged him, pushed him beyond his limits.

We Also Seek Relief

We are no different from Jeremiah. We also look for that emotional refuge — the space where our pain gives us permission to stop. Where we feel entitled to complain, as if to say: "I am a victim, I have suffered too much." But God, in His faithfulness, does not treat us as victims, but as soldiers in training.

God's Answer: A Call to Overcome

Instead of gentle comfort, God responds with an incisive question:

"If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses?"
Jeremiah 12:5 (NIV)

This question changes everything. God is saying that what we face today is still the foundation, not the summit. What exhausts us now is only the beginning. And if we are already stumbling here, how will we face what is yet to come?

The Purpose Behind the Trial

God is not diminishing us. He is training us. The present is not the mountain's peak — it is only the foothills. And He wants to take us higher. He wants to prepare you to endure what is impossible in human eyes.

This text is a call to awakening. Life with God is not about avoiding fatigue, but about being transformed by it. It is in effort, in perseverance, and in obedience that we are shaped to run not among men... but among horses.

Conclusion

The present challenge is not the mountaintop — it is only the base. There is much more above, and God is preparing us to climb. You were not called to run among men. God is calling you to run with horses.
