Witnesses Wanted: Please Present Evidence

Witnesses wanted: please present evidence

Scripture text: Acts 1:6-9

"…but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." (Acts 1:8)

Introduction

The last words of a person carry weight. And when Jesus is about to be taken up into heaven, He does not speak about structures, temples, or human strategies. He speaks of identity. Of purpose. Of vocation.

Jesus does not merely send the Church into the world with a mission. He forms her with a vocation. And that vocation is clear: to be a witness.

Calling, Mission, and Vocation

In the life of the Church, these three elements are fundamental:

  • Calling: When Jesus says to Peter "upon this rock I will build my church," He calls the Church into existence (Matthew 16:18).
  • Mission: "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation" (Mark 16:15).
  • Vocation: "You will be my witnesses" (Acts 1:8).

Mission is what we do.

Vocation is who we are.

Mission lives in the mind: planning, strategy, action.

Vocation lives in the heart: essence, passion, identity.

What does it mean to be a witness?

The word "witness" in the original text is mártys, which also means martyr. That changes everything.

Being a witness is not merely telling what you saw.

It is living the message — to the point of giving your very life for it, if necessary.

"Now I know that the word of the Lord from your mouth is the truth." (1 Kings 17:24)

The world does not only need to hear about Jesus. It needs to see Jesus in us.

Our lives must confirm what our mouths proclaim.

The first witness: Stephen

In Acts 7, we encounter Stephen. Full of the Spirit, wisdom, and grace, he is unjustly accused, yet stands firm. While they stone him, he prays as Jesus prayed: "Father, forgive them."

"Look," he said, "I see heaven open and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God." (Acts 7:56)

The only time in the entire Bible that Jesus appears standing in heaven.

Jesus rises to receive His first witness.

The Danger of False Witness

A false witness is someone who speaks of what they do not live.

It is the 007 believer: at work, no one knows they are a Christian. On social media, Jesus never appears.

"How can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?" (Romans 10:14)

It is not enough to live quietly and hope people notice.

True testimony speaks and lives.

We were not called to be Jesus' lawyers.

We were called to be witnesses.

The Secret of the Witness: The Holy Spirit

"…but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you…" (Acts 1:8)

The secret of the witness is not eloquence, charisma, or credentials.

The secret is the power of the Holy Spirit.

He is the one who equips, reminds, convicts, and transforms.

Your part is to make yourself available. He does the rest.

The Witness Does Not Hide

The world thirsts for what we carry. It is tired of empty speeches and appearances.

It wants truth. And the transforming truth is in us.

Do not hide Jesus in your life, your business, your social media.

"Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ." (Romans 10:17)

If you live the gospel, speak about it.

If you carry Jesus, show Him.

If you are grateful, testify.

Jesus does not want spiritual reporters or Pharisee judges.

He wants true witnesses.

Conclusion

The church is not a place to hear people talk about Jesus.

The church is a place where witnesses gather to present evidence that Jesus is alive.

"However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me — the task of testifying to the good news of God's grace." (Acts 20:24)

You were called.

You were given a vocation.

You were empowered.

Now testify.
